What goes great with binge-watching? POPCORN, of course! This easy, inexpensive, and healthy Homemade Microwave Popcorn will satisfy all of your snack cravings!

Anyone else perpetually binge-watching your favorite cable TV series during this pandemic? Guilty pleasures are what we need right now! Another guilty pleasure is this super easy and delicious, gluten-free Homemade Microwave Popcorn, made with two different seasonings.

A white bowl of popcorn on a black board with two seasonings behind and a bowl of kernels on the side.

Skip buying unhealthy, store-bought popcorn and make the BEST homemade microwave popcorn. It's so easy with this popcorn recipe with two different seasonings prepared in a brown paper bag. My whole family loves making this healthy, homemade microwave popcorn recipe!

Ingredients for popcorn in a paper bag

You just cannot believe how much easier (and cheaper) it is to make your own popcorn at home! All you need are a few ingredients, a microwave, and a brown paper bag!

    • 1 cup of popcorn kernels
    • Brown paper lunch bag
    • 1 tablespoon canola oil
    • 1 teaspoon Sriracha seasoning
    • OR 1 teaspoon Everything Bagel seasoning
A jar of McCormick sriracha seasoning
A jar of Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel seasoning

Sriracha seasoning brings a new level of heat to the microwave popcorn, with a blend of chili peppers, garlic, and vinegar. Everything Bagel seasoning is the perfect blend of spices (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, sea salt flakes, dried garlic, and dried onions) and adds a delicious flavor and crunch to the popcorn! Or, pick your own seasonings!

A large jar of of Orville Redenbacher's original popcorn kernels

I used Orville Redenbacher’s Original Popcorn which are 100 percent natural, non-GMO, whole grain, gluten-free popcorn kernels.

    Recipe notes

    • I used a standard brown paper lunch bag. The ½ cup fills the bag just to the top in just 2 minutes!
    • Every microwave is different so you may need more time. Just make sure to remove the bag when the popping has 2 seconds between pops, otherwise you’ll have burnt kernels!
    • You can use either oil or butter. I wanted mine on the lighter side so I chose canola oil. I’m not into buttery popcorn, but it’s your choice!
    • Be careful when you open the bag. The steam can burn you! The bag will be oily, so you will want to transfer the popcorn to a serving bowl.
    • Sprinkle extra seasoning on top if you so desire!

    • Total Time: 4.5 minutes
    • Yield: 2 1x

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • ½ cup uncooked popcorn kernels
    • Brown paper lunch bag
    • 1 tablespoon canola oil
    • 1 teaspoon Sriracha seasoning
    • OR 1 teaspoon Everything Bagel seasoning

    Instructions

    1. Place the uncooked popcorn kernels into the paper bag. Fold the top over twice to seal.
    2. Put the paper bag into the microwave on its side, with the seal facing upwards.
    3. Microwave on high for 2 to 2 ½ minutes, or until popping slows, about 2 seconds between pops.
    4. Meanwhile, mix the oil and seasoning together in a small bowl.
    5.  Remove the bag and open carefully so as not to get burnt by the steam. Place the cooked popcorn in a serving bowl and toss in the seasoning mixture. Taste for seasoning and sprinkle extra seasoning on top if so desired.

The Notes tells us that the "1/2 cup" about fills a regular lunch paper bag.
The Recipe itself calls for 1 Cup of kernels. Disconnect which may or may not result in popped kernels flying !

I love your newsletter and recipes. My only criticism would be that I do often notice anomalies like this, some of them significant - which would EASILY be remedied by serious PROOFREADING.

Thanks for catching this, Suzan! I do appreciate the comment. I will change the recipe amount so the popcorn doesn't go flying! I'm in the process of updating a bunch of my recipe posts so hopefully I'll catch these myself. Glad you enjoy the newsletter!

High Marks for correcting the recipe ! You are super-fast !
Having done a LOT of proofreading in my time, I am well aware how helpful that skill can be. Especially to the writer(s) who seem to be immune to noticing small anomalies after they've written, rewritten, so many times in the process they don't even see such things. Even spelling errors !

If you have a GOOD friend, who possesses top notch proofreading skill (aka somewhat obsessive) by all means, pay them in FOOD and consider it a win.

thanks for offering such WONDERFUL newsletter/recipes !

I appreciate the kind words, Suzan! I'm a one-woman show here, so I sometimes miss the typos! 🙁

So much less expensive than buying boxed or bagged popcorn! And you can customize your popcorn with spices!
